Washer Sizes
Most full-size washers in North America are about 27 inches wide, but depth, height and door or lid clearance vary a lot between front-loaders, top-loaders and compact models. Enter the width, depth and height of your laundry space and the fit checker shows which types fit, how much room you need for the door or lid, and whether a stacked pair will work.

Standard washer dimensions
| Type | Width | Depth | Height | Typical capacity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Front-load, full size | 27–28″ | 30–34″ (door closed) | 38–40″ | 4.2–5.8 cu ft |
| Top-load, full size | 27–29″ | 26–29″ | 42–46″ (lid closed) | 3.5–5.5 cu ft |
| Compact front-load | 24″ | 24–26″ | 33–35″ | 2.2–2.6 cu ft |
| Stacked full-size pair | 27″ | 30–34″ | 75–79″ | — |
| Stacked compact pair | 24″ | 24–26″ | 66–70″ | — |
| All-in-one washer-dryer | 24″ (also 27″) | 24–27″ | 33–40″ | 2.4–4.8 cu ft |
These are typical ranges across common models. Always check the exact specification of the washer you are considering — especially depth including the door and hose connections.
Clearance you need
| Where | Typical allowance |
|---|---|
| Each side | About 1″ for air and vibration |
| Behind | 4–6″ for hoses, drain and dryer vent |
| Above a top-loader | Room for the lid to open — often 55–60″ from the floor |
| In front of a front-loader | Door swing about 20–22″, plus room to load: 36–48″ total |
| Closet doors | Louvred or bi-fold doors with ventilation openings are often required |
Front-load or top-load?
- Front-load: usually more water- and energy-efficient, gentler on clothes, and stackable. Needs room in front for the door; some users find bending down harder (pedestals help).
- Top-load with agitator: fast cycles and familiar, but uses more water.
- High-efficiency top-load (impeller): larger drum and lower water use than agitator models.
- Compact 24″: fits closets and apartments; often stackable or all-in-one.
Capacity guide
| Household | Suggested drum capacity |
|---|---|
| 1 person | 2.0–3.0 cu ft |
| 2 people | 3.0–4.0 cu ft |
| 3–4 people | 4.0–4.5 cu ft |
| 5+ people or bulky bedding | 4.5–5.5+ cu ft |
Capacity is measured in cubic feet in North America and in kilograms of dry laundry in Europe and elsewhere (commonly 7–10 kg for a family machine). The two aren’t directly convertible because they measure different things.
How to measure your laundry space
- Measure the width between walls or cabinets at the narrowest point.
- Measure depth from the back wall to the front of the space (or closet door when closed).
- Measure height to any shelf, cabinet or ceiling; for top-loaders, check lid clearance.
- Note the positions of water valves, drain and electrical outlet.
- Measure doorways and stairs on the delivery route.
- Enter the space in the fit checker and compare with specific models.
Worked example
A laundry closet 30 inches wide, 36 inches deep and 84 inches high fits a full-size front-loader (27 × 32 inches plus clearance) or a stacked full-size pair, which needs about 77–79 inches of height. It also fits a compact or all-in-one model. A top-loader would fit side-to-side, but the lid needs about 56–58 inches of height, which is fine here unless there is a low shelf.
Dryer sizes and stacking
| Dryer type | Width | Depth | Height | Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full-size vented | 27–29″ | 28–32″ | 38–46″ | 7.0–7.8 cu ft |
| Compact (24″) | 24″ | 24–26″ | 33–35″ | 4.0–4.5 cu ft |
| Heat-pump / ventless | 24–27″ | 25–32″ | 34–39″ | 4.0–8.0 cu ft |
A dryer’s drum should be roughly twice the washer’s capacity so loads can tumble freely. Stacking requires a front-load washer and a matching stacking kit from the manufacturer; top-loaders can’t be stacked. Check that the combined height plus a few inches for the kit fits under shelves, and that controls on the upper dryer are within comfortable reach.
Moving a washer into place
- Measure doors, halls and stair turns — most washers need about 30 inches of clear width, including the handles on the delivery trolley.
- Front-loaders are heavy (often 150–230 lb) and have shipping bolts that must be removed before use.
- Protect floors with cardboard or a moving mat.
- Level the machine carefully to reduce vibration and noise.
- Run an empty rinse cycle first and check all hose connections for drips.
European and metric sizes
In the UK and Europe, most freestanding washing machines are about 60 cm wide, 85 cm high and 55–60 cm deep, designed to fit under a 90 cm worktop. Slimline models are around 45–50 cm deep, and integrated models fit behind a kitchen cabinet door. Switch the fit checker to centimetres to compare your space with North American sizes.
